I used to spend hours getting ready. I took so long that my entire family still teases me to this day – if we have to go out at 9, my sister knocks on my door at 4 and asks me “aren’t you running late?” I loved experimenting with different colors and cosmetics and would spend forever painstakingly making sure every hair was in place. But, as I grew older and time seemed to move at a faster pace, I didn’t have the luxury of spending half an hour on my eye makeup. I wanted an eye shadow that I could use in a hurry for when I went out in the evenings that looked good just by itself, without me having to apply three different shadows at once, as well as something that looked phenomenal with almost anything. I literally kissed the MAC counter when I found Woodwinked.

Ladies, trust me when I say that Woodwinked is one of the most important eye shadows you will own. Woodwinked is part of the Veluxe Pearl shadow line and is described by MAC to be a “warm antique gold.” I know a lot of Desi girls who own this one, and pretty much all of them seem to love and swear by it.

img_45491Very few eye shadows can be worn alone (unless it’s a neutral color for something like work). Wearing just one shade of shadow gives the eye a very flat look as it does not accentuate the right areas to make your eyes seem brighter, rounder, whatever you wish. This can make you appear washed out, or worse, scary-looking (think blue eye shadow without any blending – yikes!). However, the multidimensional shine of Woodwinked gives the appearance of having blended two or more eye shadows together, it’s not absolutely perfect by itself, but if you’re in a hurry, you can simply apply a wash of the color all over your lid with a little black eye liner in the inner rims of your eyes and you’re good to go. It’s also a great eye shadow to use when doing a gold/black smoky eye (for those who have been asking for eye tutorials, one will be coming up soon!).

Woodwinked suits pretty much all skin tones. And I mean all. My sisters and I represent three different South Asian color tones in the fair, medium, and dark skinned categories. It looks good on ALL of us. It’s great for going out to parties, clubs, dinners, and weddings. Once you try it on, it will most likely become a staple in your makeup collection.

Lastly, and most importantly, not only is it a time saver and a flattering color, but if you’re not particularly skillful at applying eye makeup, this eye shadow will save you from a lot of frustration. It’s basically a swipe and go.

Those of you that already own Woodwinked, feel free to share your thoughts with the rest of the girls. I have been hearing from a lot of you that you feel shy about commenting, but please don’t hesitate to say what’s on your mind – the idea is to be a part of a community and for all the readers to help each other out – there are no silly questions!

add nylon by mac to your repertoire- it goes well with woodwinked! as for desis (like me) who wear a lot of heavy kohl- make sure you blend it and smudge it- that straight blunt line on top of shimmery eyeshadow in my opinion- looks bad- too harsh.

I also love love love woodwinked, especially when wearing desi clothes. The only problem is that when I wear it, in pictures it looks like i am wearing orange eyeshadow. I thought it was a fluke, but this has happened 2-3 times, so now I am a little hesitant to use it..

I don’t wear that much makeup but I am addicted to woodwinked! I use it at every shaadi, party, dinner etc! It comes out as a bronze gold on me and never looks too harsh. For those of you who don’t wear that much makeup and want an eyeshadow that takes only seconds to apply, this is a must have!

Thanks for the recommendation, I’m also bad at putting colors together. Can you tell me where each color goes?

Hi Sarah!! That’s a great idea for a post! Just remember lighter colors go on the inner lid (the nose side) and darker colors are genuinely used on the outer lid (the temple side) and in the crease. Shimmery highlighters most often go on the brow bone but ofcourse can be used elsewhere – this is just a quick rundown to get you started. I’ll put up a proper diagram as soon as I can! Happy New Year! :)

  15. I COMPLETELY agree with the blunt line comment, it’s actually one of the first things I talk about in my makeup tutorials, especially harsh black liner over light frosty shadows – no no no no no no!

  16. AF, I know exactly what you mean. DO you notice that it’s a bit more orange around the top and sides where it fades into your skin? think you should try NS’s recommendations and blend out the creases with something a little darker, it will definitely lessen the orange-ish color.

I think I like subdued colors when it comes to eyeshadows. I have tried woodwinked but for some reason did not look good on me at all. I have seen my other friends wear it and look fabulous! So I had to search for something else with similar effect. That’s when I found Lezard by lancome and I have been in love ever since. Impress and Burnt Sand by lancome is pretty good too but Lezard is my all time favorite.

woodwinked paired with expensive pink is sheer heaven! but I agree it does look orangish in flash photography so probably blending is the way to go

What kind of eyeliner can you use to get the smudged effect that you described? thanks in advance :)

  27. Hi Amrita, welcome to the site!

I’m unsure of which line/comment you’re referring to, if you let me know I will be more than happy to help you out :)

  28. Amrita says:

hehe sorry sorry- sos brought it up in post 3. I have trouble finding eyeliner that will stay put but is soft enough to smudge, and will stay on my waterline. any suggestions?

    [Reply]

  29. Hahaha no problem :) The problem with liner is that if you want one that it is difficult to find one that is smudgable for the upper lid but strong enough to stay put on the waterline, so unfortunately you will have to use two products. Check out Mac’s Eye Kohl in Smolder for the lids or the Kohl by Lancome. For the waterline, I usually use a gel liner – by either MAC or Bobbi Brown – they come in a pot and you need a brush. With any liner on my waterline, I apply a little black eyeshadow on the top of the liner to mattify it and make it last. Hope that helps!
