Burning Question of the Week – Disobedient Eyeliner

You’re off to a big party and you’ve been planning your outfit and makeup for weeks. As you walk out the door, you look more spectacular than you have in a while, your dress emphasizes all the right curves, your hair softly cascades down your back, and the eyeliner you’ve struggled with your whole life managed to go on in a straight line today. You start making your rounds at the party and after a little while excuse yourself to go to the bathroom. That’s when you look up into the mirror and realize your entire eyeliner has somehow migrated upward, causing you to have double, even triple lines of black on your lid.

Sound familiar? It’s happened to all of us, and from the questions I’ve been receiving from many of you, it’s a big problem that needs a solution – now! We’ve decided to add a new section to our site that answers the most popular question of the week. Not all our tips work on everyone, so we encourage you all to share your secrets with us.

Here are some of our recommendations for the problem above:

- Make sure your face is washed before applying liner, you don’t need any excess oil in the eye area

- Always use a base, in the form of either concealer or eyeshadow primer. A popular primer is Urban Decay Primer Potion – it’s a bit expensive, but will last you a while and is great under all shadows.

- The thicker your eyeliner, the more it will smudge. Try not to go over your eyeliner too many times.

- Some say to brush your eyelid slightly with your face powder after applying liner. We’re not a fan of this method as we feel if you don’t use a powder that’s translucent enough, it will destroy your look if you’re going for the dark black eyeliner. However, give it a shot and let us know what works!

- If you have oiler lids, try not to use “Kohl” liner on your upper lids, as it is softer and will smudge more. Gel or waterproof liners are best. Check out Fluidline by MAC or Bobbi Brown gel liners.

- Lastly, and this is our favorite, go over your liner with an eyeshadow of the same color. The shadow will set and suck up any oil from the liner. Do this for both the upper lid and the inner rims. We love MAC Carbon for black – it’s really the most pitch black shadow you will find.

If anyone has any more suggestions, we would love to hear them! Please share with us what has worked for you!

Something I do for clients that have oily eyelids is cleanse the area properly and make sure it is completely dry. Then I put on an eye shadow base, and then for the upper lid line the lash line with a waterproof pencil and then go over that line with a liquid liner. Also works great for the lower lash line. Not only do you get a darker and more dramatic effect but the eyeliner stays in place!

Following up on Kalsoom’s question: I’ve heard that blue looks great with brown eyes, but I’m a bit tentative about trying it with desi skintones. What are your thoughts on blue and other non-black/brown eyeliner colors?

  8. Rupal, what kind of eye shadow base do you use – is there one by Lancome you recommend? Also, Is there something you do to make the base have a less white-ish look? The one I use doesn’t completely sink into the skin.

  9. that’s what you think. MUAHAHAHAHA

  10. Like sos mentioned, i use the ones listed below (209 and 210) – they are easy to use and you can get the precision you need – they are both essentially the same, one is just thinner than the other so it’s a matter of preference.

I also love the small angle brush that’s supposed to be used for eyebrows, it’s great for eyeliner. I like the one from Sephora brand – it’s much cheaper and works much better than the MAC angle brush.

Overall though, if you’re adept at applying liner, go for the MAC 209, you’ll love it.

Hi girls, I’m actually not a fan of brown eyeliner with brown eyes unless the brown is so dark it almost looks black. As my friend Jai says “brown on brown, no no no.” I feel like it actually dulls the color of your eyes, doesn’t make them “pop.” If you like the brownish color, go for a bronze. There are many bronzes that are not sparkly and totally wearable at work. Check out shades by Lancome and L’oreal depending on your budget. I’m planning on going shopping for a bronze this week, so I’ll let you guys know what I find.

Blue looks amazing! You just have to find the shade of blue that you’re comfortable with. I find bright aqua colors don’t suit me, so I use inkier blue eyeshadows (in indigo and royal blue) as liner by wetting my brush first then applying. If you want to use it for work, go for the midnight blue.

Also if you have brown eyes, someone recently recommended green eyeliner, yes it sounds scary, but green has safe shades, like moss and olive (I also love them as eyeshadows, I’ll be doing a tutorial with those colors soon). The green will bring out the hazel tones in your brown eyes.

i do use the one by lancome in the pot. the key is to rub it around on your ring finger and thumb or on your hand and warm it up a bit so it goes on smoother and blends in well. apply with your ring finger, and always remember a little bit goes a long way!

Try placing your elbow on a flat raised surface or a table and then apply the eyeliner , one gets a completely even and an unshaky finish. My eyeliner was always a mess but this trick gives it precision.

Waterproof liquid eyeliner, i SWEAR by it. Ill spend crazy cash on eyeshadows and blushes, but tried and test (and ive literally tried every eyeliner on the market) is maybelline, no JOKE. as long as you let it dry (20 seconds max) you are good to go for the rest of the night. this has lasted though the sweatiest of south asian summers without smudging.

    try it lovelies!

  19. Hi Mehnaz!

I apologize I never responded to this question, I seem to have overlooked it mistakenly. For blue eyes, definitely go for brown or even bronze, they will make your brown eyes pop. I would actually also recommend using a slate or charcoal grey :)
