As I was walking out of a coffee shop this morning, I bumped into an absolutely stunning desi girl. She was dressed immaculately and her hair and makeup were perfection. However, her unnatural grey eyes were startling, and not in the way I expect she had wanted them to be. Her colored contacts looked incredibly odd against her complexion and took away from the beauty of her features. It was then that I got to thinking about all the desi girls I’ve run into who have chosen to replace their natural eye color with tinted contact lenses.
I have to admit, I have never been one to try colored contacts, I personally feel they look absurd. However, I’m curious to know what you all think about them. Take the poll below or sound off in the comments section. How do you all feel about desi girls with colored contacts? Are they a miracle invention for us South Asians or a beauty disaster?
[polldaddy poll=1520929]

99% a disaster. I have met maybe one girl who could pull it off, and only because the contacts were mildly colored, not the deep grey that some desi women sport.

I think colored contacts on desi girls is a complete fail. It looks unnatural, and often scary.
[Reply]
desi girls need to just accept their natural eye color.. and natural hair color!!! blonde hair & dark skin is also a big beauty fail.
[Reply]
They look like aliens with their colored contacts!!!! Brown skin and blue, brown skin and grey, brown skin and green, hey gurrrrls, we can see your eye color is fake!!!!!! It’s scarrrrry!
[Reply]
It seems like you are trying to hard when you wear colored contacts…we are not going to look like aishwariya by wearing them!! hers are obviously natural and it works for her!
[Reply]
100% beauty fail.. i think it reflects insecurities aswell. Why the need to hide behind these coloured contacts ?It looks awful and you can see that its fake from miles away.. why cant South asian women and MEN (ive seen a couple ) realize that they are not the next Aishwariya Rai or Hritik or Megan Fox… Why wanna have someone elses eye colour ? i really dont get it.
Maybe one or two girls can pull it of… as in-they can fool you with them but if its recognition for your beauty or attention you need honestly speaking can one enjoy compliments recieved for something that is not even real ?
Pleassssse throw away those coloured contactttssss asappp they scareee mmmee ure all gorgeous without them <3

FAIL!
I actually think when desi girls dye their hair and wear colored contacts it’s a reflection on something wrong with society – why is our standard of beauty to be fairer, lighter haired, and lighter eyed? Embracing your natural beauty is far more impressive than trying to replicate a standard in a different society.
[Reply]
i also think it is this constant battle about wanting to be different. like the majority of south asian women have dark hair and dark eyes, so these “blond, blue eyed” women just want to stand out, but what they don’t realize is that they are sticking out in a not attractive way. and we ALL know its fake!
[Reply]
a big no no …. They look so scary and so fake and not to mention soooooo ridiculous !!!! And pls why do desi girls who wear these coloured disasters insist it’s their natural eye colour …. Arggggg
And I second julie’s comment …. Men wearing coloured contacts look like bafoons
[Reply]
I think they are absolutely hideous. Although I was guilty of committing this fashion fail when i was 16 for six months =( I would NEVER do it again. I especially hate it when desi girls wear contacts that don’t compliment their skin tones.
[Reply]
nope. they look fake and horrible. show your true beauty girls- your brown eye colour looks pretty on you!!
[Reply]
Everyone knows it fake, I have never seen it work on any desi girl. TOTAL FAIL.
[Reply]
wait…so that blue eyed girl named Samanpriajot Devarajan the other day was lying to me abt her eyes?!
how dare.
[Reply]
on a more serious note:
Have you all read “the bluest eye” by Nobel Prize recipient Toni Morrison? the book is a tragic story about a you african-american girl–brought up in the 50’s and her desire to have blue eyes…its a critique on society and how these insecurities are developed by minorities.
[Reply]
I am a desi male and I think colored contacts on desi girls are just fine. Everyone here seems to be such a proponent of self-righteous naturalism. Why not also keep your hair jet black (for those of you born with it)? I mean c’mon, who are you fooling by streaking it purple or hazel or whatever color you use?
If a desi girl wears blue contacts, rock on. If you feel good doing it, more power to you! I doubt a desi girl or guy would be like yea look at my killer blue eyes, totally genetic–popped out of the va-jay jay with em!
insecurities? let the first girl here with no insecurities cast the first stone.

puke.

Ouch! I think I’m going to be the DA again. I wear colored contacts all the time. The reason. My eye color is a half dark gray with blue rims, which looks very odd on my complexion. I wear black, and brown contacts and so far no one fell off their chair when they saw me. It’s not a matter of insecurity but looking different. I’ve even worn blue contacts and no one gave me weird looks. Just my two cents worth. HUGS.

RKJ the point is to stop girls from feeling like they have to conform to the western idea of beauty ie light eyes and hair. its true all girls have insecurities but this one of wanting to look like something you’re not happens alot in our culture i mean look at the amount of whitening products we have in desi society. we are trying to stop the insecurity not try to feed it by encouraging girls who feel the need to do this.
[Reply]
I’m not a fan of coloured contacts either, especially on desi’s. I find it a bit scary, and have never met a girl (or guy) who could pull it off.
[Reply]
@ RKJ
ouchhhh did we just hit a weak point there ? Or why else the lashout ?
And are you seriously gonna compare hair colouring to coloured contacts? LOL.coloured contacts give such a stone dead look.
You seem to like the trends in fake&bake o-ville and I am not denying ppl their individuality and enhancing or improving your look but I
personally draw the line at coloured contacts, thas all.I mean have you never heard the expression eyes are the window to the soul ? Dont you greet ,speak or read peoples eyes ?and speaking of beauty and eyes-Havent you heard supermodells like heidi klum or tyra banks say ” how the eyes should speak for themselves and to use them to convey your message -be it to the camera or the audience ?”Why is that ? well because eyes speak volumes- the essence of outer beauty ( or maybe even inner -think dalai lamas sparkling eyes ) is in them, why else do countless women/men wanna fake them right ?
And yes nobody is denying that they have insecurities here-i have tons !what matter is how you deal with them-the process of how to grow more comfortable in your own skin- im not saying its an easy process but I think coloured contacts ( if you are a regular user ) is one of those easy ways out to fit into some beauty ideal that one shudnt have to struggle to fit into.
@reimas -I remember you recommending that book to me b4 Ive read it now
good read.
@ SADIA
DARLING ..your eyes sound absolutly GORJUZ. If half darkgrey with blue rims isnt DIFFERENT then what is ?-the whole desi world would die to have your natural eyes .Huggggs xox

Eeeeek, so I actually wore green lenses for like 6 years, lipstickmasala herself can attest to this. although i was lucky that they didnt look outrageous, it wasnt out of a sense of insecurity. Dont ask me why i did it, i dont even know if i could articulate the absurdity in retrospect. POINT BEING, once i STOPPED wearing colored contacts is when i actually started getting complimented on my eyes, go figure!
the point is, I’d say 50/50 makeup fail. to each his own.
but…100% fail if combined with blonde highlights
[Reply]
hmmmm.. lots of controversy.
i think the problem is not so much the desire to wear the contacts as the quality of the chosen contacts. many brands available out there especially ones worn by younger girls are simply too harsh and artificial looking. i mean who has eyes like that with such sharp, unblended colors? its another thing to want to look like ashwariya (who doesnt) but must you end up looking like ca (the snake from the jungle book cartoon)! or a lizard even.
yuck, yuck, yuck. i mean we’ve all probably wondered how we would look with blue, gray, green eyes, just for a change even. nothing wrong with that but please try to buy the contacts that are flattering and natural, or go without. and please, dont try to convince us that they’re real. COS WE CAN TELL!!!!! really.
[Reply]
Its ok to be insecure abt some stuff its kinda normal right ? who likes everrrrrrrything abt themselves?? its ok to not be satisfied with everything and wanna change some of ittt But when you take extreme measures to fake it like these cheap as contacts or get surgery and all of that i think its a def FAIL. eeeekkkkkkk
[Reply]
Thanx Julie for your vote of confidence, however, believe me that color makes you look like either a challenged person or a half blind. So maybe I do have an insecurity there….Wow! LOL. Never thought about it that way.
But, here’s something that came to me while reading other’s posts. Colored contacts are no more than the make up one uses. Instead of using the blues, greens or other bold colors, has anyone wondered what color contact would look good on a desi? Anyone ever want to try, then try out honey brown. Not only does it do wonders for every skin color, it makes a subtle difference. Just my two cents. Hugs, Sadia
[Reply]
@jtm you are absolutely right about the quality of the contacts, it really is true!
As Sadia says, maybe leaning toward a more natural color like honey brown might be better for those girls with really dark eyes.
P.S. Don’t listen to what Sadia says about the color of her eyes – she has the most beautiful eyes ever!
[Reply]
colored contacts are ok .. when its suits.. the complexion.. but i mean cmon people wake up.. Ive know a lots of people wearing blue/grey contacts but looks out of place with their skintone.,, and they look possessed
[Reply]
Im with you RKJ , why should we all boo the person who wears colored contacts? I mean is it any different for those who wear makeup to cover their not so perfect skin, or wear eyeliner and eyeshadow to enhance their eyes, when girls do that it’s to enhance thier looks. .I mean come on people, we have to realize that choice of wearing is upon the person who wears it. As for looking good or not, that is just like how we girls respond to one another by being catty and snide. Most of you who are trying to diss a girl cause she wears colored contacts are part of this forum where beauty plays into how others percieve you. And we all know you all care about how others see you that is why most of you want to know tricks to better yourself..although most of the problem with the way we see others and ourselves begin from inside not out.

8 years ago when I was in 7th grade I had grey colored contacts. I don’t know why I thought they looked good, because they most certainly did NOT.
No need to try and cover it up with a “prettier” hue.
Then in high school I had green ones for awhile and those looked perfectly natural but still nothing beats someone’s true eye color

EPIC FAIL!
Guilty of this heinous crime at 16. Never again!
