Experience an Indian Summer with Stila Cosmetics' New Collection

Posted by Lipstick Masala On May - 31 - 2009

hermes22Every so often, major names in the fashion world create lines or products that they market as “inspired by” India. In 2008 the ready-to-wear collection by Jean Paul Gautier for Hermes featured Nehru jackets, tunics and sari variations. Later that summer, we were tempted by the vivid jewel tones of nail polishes from OPI’s India Collection, of which names like “Royal Rajah Ruby” and “Curry Up Don’t be Late!” were quick to intrigue and even quicker to impress upon application. But, then there are occasions when lines are released and one is confused as to whether the reference to India is really due to Desi influence or simply a marketing tool. Such is the case with the new Indian Summer Collection by Stila Cosmetics. While some of the articles seem promising, it is difficult to find a true connection with Indian culture other than the aggressive advertising that is being done to dupe the public into believing the products they are using are truly “ethnic.”

goldbarrenThe line by Stila is said to be infused with real 24 karat gold. Now I find this both fascinating and amusing for several reasons. As Desis, I’m sure most of you (especially those currently planning their weddings) are well aware that gold prices are increasing exponentially Read the rest of this entry »

Back to the Future: Neon Nails

Posted by Lipstick Masala On May - 28 - 2009

cricci-anothermag-1The 80s are back. Actually, they’ve been creeping up on us for a while. For over a year now, designers have been incorporating revamped versions of the funky fashions and colors from two decades ago into their runway shows. And now, the designs and accessories have finally filtered down into your local Forever 21 – this time, hopefully, without the awful linebacker shoulder pads (remember Melanie Griffith in Working Girl? *shudder*). Yes, the 80’s are back. But, don’t reach for your Jane Fonda leg warmers just yet. Today’s interpretation of yesterday’s trends is much more subtle, i.e. a wisely chosen clothing piece, accessory or accent rather than an explosion of net, fluorescent prints, and hair spray. If you’re unsure of how to incorporate the look into your daily attire, there is always the option to start small – with your nails.

Neon colors have been popping up in makeup collections, from lipstick to eye shadow, but the most popular beauty trend now and through Summer 09 is bright, flashy nails. Read the rest of this entry »

Natural Conditioners: Using Yogurt as a Hair Mask

Posted by Lipstick Masala On May - 21 - 2009

6These days, I find myself more than a little upset with Mother Nature. Her indecisiveness as to whether or not she wishes it to be winter or summer is not only causing me difficulty in choosing outfits every morning, but it’s wreaking havoc on my skin and hair. My confused, irritated scalp is dry and itchy and as I scratch at it relentlessly, it has begun to flake. Furthermore, my strands have turned dull and lifeless in the bewilderment of whether to produce oil or go into lockdown mode. I recently dragged my mother to our nearest ULTA store, where I spent twenty minutes contemplating which hair mask to spend $$$ on. Mom finally just leaned over and said, “Seriously, just put dahi (yogurt) in your hair.” When I inquired further, she informed me that when she was younger, everyone she knew would apply a plain yogurt mask to their hair, resulting in soft, silky, dandruff-free tresses.

Now, as a product of the eighties, I tend to doubt anything natural. My first inclination was to tease my mother and say “ewwww, mom, like, we have companies to MAKE that stuff for us now.” A lot of magazines will also tell you there are no proven benefits to herbalusing natural ingredients versus manufactured products. But the truth is, the advice of our mothers and grandmothers do hold a lot of merit. They didn’t have the luxury of free Kérastase treatments and blowouts – their techniques evolved from generations before them and were based on traditional and Ayurvedic medicine and/or an innate understanding of the human anatomy. Upon researching the effectiveness/science behind using yogurt in one’s hair, I realized our mothers were really onto something. Read the rest of this entry »

Short on Time? Dry Shampoo Your ‘Do

Posted by Lipstick Masala On May - 15 - 2009

Nikita Anand Picture 1It’s 8 am. You should have been out of the house fifteen minutes ago, but you slept through your alarm. You are jumping like a madwoman to get one leg into your pants while you furiously brush your teeth and send a message to your colleague on your blackberry. You then run back to your bathroom and groan as you catch a glimpse of your oily bangs in the mirror. There is no time for a cup of coffee let alone a wash and blow-dry. So, what do you do? Do you walk into your meeting your hair plastered against your forehead? No, ladies. Let’s try to avoid greasy hair in the boardroom.

Hair companies have begun en masse to market a product known as “dry shampoo,” basically a glorified form of baby powder that soaks up the oil in your hair/roots upon application. Although the concept has been around for a while, women everywhere have started to spend upwards of 30 dollars on single bottles of this product. After a brief discussion with a group of brilliant ladies on Twitter, I was inspired to pull out my sources to find the best of the wide range of dry shampoos. Read the rest of this entry »

Cover-up Confusion: Choosing a Concealer

Posted by Lipstick Masala On May - 11 - 2009

7523We’ve all seen the photos of the unfortunate girl with the caked on foundation too light for her skin tone and have gone out of our way to make sure we don’t end up like her. But, in our desperate attempts to make sure our neck matches our jawline, many of us end up neglecting another area on our face prone to a similar error in color judgment – the circle of skin around our eyes. While some are less noticeable than others, many ladies are sporting panda eyes (black liner encompassed by a ring of white ) that shine from across the room like two bright halos. Incorrect shade choices and application techniques are to blame for this dreaded effect that can easily be avoided by keeping a few key pointers in mind. While both the concealer as well as the method of application are important, we’ll focus today on how to make sure you have the right color on hand, step one in total eradication of the Panda flu infecting ladies everywhere.

The first mistake most girls make is in picking the wrong consistency of concealer, understandable seeing as there are enough options out there to confuse anyone. Textures range anywhere from dry, solid sticks to creamy pots to tubes and wands of liquidy cover-up. So what is the best choice for you? Several factors come to play in this decision, your age, your skin type, what exactly you are trying to conceal and obviously, your skin tone. Read the rest of this entry »

Summer 2009: The Bobbi Brown Nautical Collection

Posted by Lipstick Masala On May - 10 - 2009

nars5You know the phrase, “less is more?” Apparently my cheeks have never heard of it. No matter what style of makeup I choose, light or dark, a pink cheek is no doubt always a part of my repertoire (although, I’m sure my sisters would like to interject here and say my look is more Raggedy Ann than a healthy flush). What can I say, I like a little bit of color – I feel a rosy cheek is the component that ties in all the other made up features of the face. However, sometimes, especially when the weather starts to get warm, I like to tone down the bright pink and reach for something a little more subtle. So, I’m constantly on a search for a product that will give me a soft dewy flushed look (think Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl) without having to apply a perfect combination of tinted moisturizer, cream blush and highlighters. Bobbi Brown’s new line of cheek tints from the Summer 2009 collection aspires to be that product.

Now, plenty of cosmetic lines have come out with stick blushes, so why should I bother with these? The Bobbi Brown salespeople claim their product is different. Why? I’m told the color is sheer/translucent – which means that even girls who hate wearing blush will like the effect of this cheek tint – but the coverage is buildable for those who need a little more pigment. Also, the moisturizers in the blush supposedly leave the skin looking dewy and fresh just in time for the summer. Read the rest of this entry »
