This article was first published in the Express Tribune, Pakistan on 4/16/10. It was written by Lipstick Masala for the column Beauty and the Brush.

The advent of spring coincides with the start of the wedding season, and mehndi invitations begin to arrive by the dozen. Panic sets in as one frantically runs to and fro from tailors and/or designers in a desperate attempt to have them sew knockoffs of designs from collections shown at fashion weeks. There is an equal frenzy in browbeating mothers into providing matching jewelery.

But when it comes to the “defining moment” that is applying makeup, most women devote relatively miniscule time and reach for the cliched black kajal and pink lipstick.

Why not break with worn out traditions and dare to embrace the bold accents and styles presented on runways this spring? Today’s beauty trends reflect the vibrant hues of nature – jewel-toned eyes mimicking oleander trees and azure skies, fruity lips evoking images of peach-lined fruit stands. Remember those bright purple and yellow eyeliners you pondered at the local Agha’s or Al-Fatah but elected in favor of your go-to black? Return to the store and grab the colorful liners. And while you’re in revolutionary mode, seriously think about tossing out your flatiron.

Those addicted to the smoky eye look, pass over standard grays and blacks. Instead, play with peacock colors and the remarkable hues of dyed gladiolas lining entrances of mehndi events. Spring 2010 New York Fashion Week revealed models experimenting with striking eye shadows. So, be creative – it’s spring after all! Sweep turquoise pigment on your eyelid but line your under-eye with purple for contrast. Mehndis are an occasion when you can be adventurous with vivid colours!

A word for those that shy away from too much makeup; opt for those colored liners we mentioned above. A sapphire blue pencil is the perfect replacement for black. But here’s the twist, don’t circle your eyes in a passe Kareena Kapoor look. Apply color only to your lower lash line, leaving your lids bare. Your eyes will appear bigger and the simple pop of colour will keep you looking trendy.

As most fashionistas already know, pairing bright eyes with dark lips is a great beauty gaffe. You don’t want to be mistaken for a 1980s Lollywood actress!! Leave the dark lipstick and even the standard nude ones in your make-up kit. This season, cosmetics companies are embracing the color peach. A sprightlier version of pink, peach complements almost any skin tone. Add some shimmer or wear your peach glossy, but avoid mattes. You want to look fresh, not aged.

Mehndis invariably involve dancing, and you’ll be struggling to contain your locks while you step to the latest Imran Khan single. Here’s some welcome news – the classic up do has been updated. Gone are the stick straight ponytails and distinct puff resting atop your head. It’s time to stop straightening your strands into oblivion and start working with your hair’s natural texture.

Ask your salon to style your tresses into a messy bun at the nape of your neck with a few loose side-swept tendrils to soften the look. If your hair isn’t naturally wavy, make sure to use a volumizing mousse so your ‘do doesn’t fall flat. If buns don’t appeal to you, sport a celebrity favorite – pull your hair to one side and loosely twist into a fishtail braid, or khajuri choti.

Before stepping out of the house, polish your look with a sweep of peachy-pink blush on your cheeks to enhance the glowing spring look. On a parting note – remember to take along your lipstick for touch-ups. Warm weather and the delectable mehndi cuisine will wear your lip color off faster than you can say “balle”.

.

If you’ve been tuned into any news channel over the past couple of days, you’ve by now surely heard about the fierce snow storm that continues to pound the East Coast of the U.S. Snowmageddon 2009 not only brought with it mountains of ice but has also subjected us to bone-chilling cold temperatures and glacial winds. Yesterday, driven crazy with cabin fever, I strapped on my fur-lined boots and mittens and ventured outside on foot. When I returned, my face was stinging from the brutal weather conditions. Today, I am regretting yesterday’s little adventure as my cheeks are chapped dry and so red that I could pass for Santa Claus’s offspring.

Unfortunately, dry skin does not just make an appearance during a rare snowstorm or two. Many ladies have complained to me recently that the winter air has been causing the skin on their face to tighten up and flake and no lotion or cream seems to be working to restore that moisture. Here is my answer: 1) If you live in a country where you have central heating on all the time, make sure to use a humidifier when you sleep at night – trust me, you will see a difference in your skin within a few days. 2) Don’t overdo it with the rich creams. Exfoliate regularly (for more information click HERE) and remove the dead skin cells on your face. This will help your regular winter lotion/cream penetrate better. If you still feel like you need something a little extra, then go a little heavier, but I feel like most of those result in clogged pores. I prefer treating my face in addition to moisturizing, which brings us to number 3) There are a number of moisturizing masks you can use that will bring your skin relief, my favorite of which is the Oatmeal mask below. It’s fast, easy, and best of all, costs next to nothing.

Regulars of this site are most likely familiar with my affinity with any products containing Oatmeal. Why do I love Oatmeal as an ingredient? Because it’s natural, soothing and cleanses the skin without irritation. Oatmeal contains protein as well as natural fats that help protect the skin’s outermost barrier while lubricating and moisturizing. Also, oats contain gentle ingredients that help cleanse which, along with the lubricants, remove dirt from your pores without stripping your face of its natural oils. Finally, oatmeal is naturally calming and great for both tough and sensitive skins – it’s the reason people soak in oatmeal baths when they have the chicken pox!

Here’s what you need to do:

Tools:

1) Measuring cup

2) Blender

3) Washcloth

Ingredients:

1) 1 banana, preferably one that has ripened and is slightly mushy

2) 1 cup of oatmeal or fresh rolled oats

3) 1/2 cup of milk (you may use less or more depending on your preference for consistency)

.

Method:

1) Put all three ingredients in blender and pulsate until you have a paste-like consistency. It should be easily spreadable on your face but not so liquidy that it drips off. If it’s too runny, add more oats, if it’s not runny enough, add a little more milk.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

2) Pour into a bowl. This recipe makes enough for two people, so pamper yourself with your friend/sister.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

3) Wash your face – it’s important to always clean your skin of makeup before using a mask.

4) Spread mask on your face and leave on for about 10 minutes (15 if you’re very dry and flaky).

5) Lie down while you have this mask on or it may crumble onto your floor if you walk about. Watch tv or just close your eyes and relax.

6) Wet a washcloth with warm water and clean off your face. Because the mask is sticky, it’s easier to use a washcloth but not necessary if you don’t have one.

7) Moisturize with a light lotion if your face feels slightly tight.

Et voilà – you’re done. I know, I look like the Swamp Thing with this mask on, but it’s well worth it. My chapped cheeks are thanking me after tonight’s oatmeal mask session.

Try it out and let us all know how it goes, and if you have any other moisturizing masks you use, share your recipe!

Like most desi girls, I’m a fan of MAC products. The pigmented shades, professional brushes and manageable prices are unbeatable. But, I have to say I’m less than impressed with the new Style Black Collection arriving next month in MAC stores. While I’m sure the products will sell out quickly like all the ones before, I find the collection contrived, boring and completely uninspired.

MAC is known for its bold looks and innovative style. But, they have definitely dropped the ball on this one. Black nail polish? Been done. Black eye shadow? Used and abused. Black lipgloss? Already graced the YSL collection a year ago. MAC seems to be simply repackaging old ideas and trying to dupe us into thinking they are new, fresh and edgy. Edgy maybe (if you are intrigued by the goth chick look), but completely unimaginative.

This is not to say I won’t purchase the products, I am a sucker for a good black polish and quite tempted to try a cheaper version of the YSL-esque black gloss (I can picture my friend, E, cringing at her desk right now and reaching to unfriend me on Facebook – she’s not a fan of my funky color choices). Yes, I will be spending $$$ on the new collection. However, I wish MAC would give its users a little more credit and treat us to something a little more original and fun.

One product from the collection I do think is worth a try is the Limited Edition Volcanic Ash exfoliator (if not for the ingredients, simply for laughs) – yes, it really does contain volcanic ash, plus sugar crystals and natural enzymes. This product was released a while ago for a short time and got rave reviews. MAC has finally brought it back in a reformulated version. If you’re allergic or have any sensitivity to sulfur based products, you will want to skip this one.

Here’s a quick look at what’s available in the new collection as listed on Specktra.net: Unfortunately, for some reason there are limited photos available of the collection. I find this strange – most cosmetics companies like to advertise way in advance. Below are pretty much the only good photos at hand taken by other bloggers (photo credits at end of post).

When getting a manicure or pedicure, there are two things that I make sure of (besides basic hygiene protocol) – that the color I choose is cheery and maddeningly vibrant, and that the topcoat is perfectly shiny, you know, the kind that makes your nails gleam so they still seem wet long after they’ve dried. This Fall, however, it seems I must temporarily put away all my favorite shades, for shiny is out and matte is back.

The nail polishes of this year’s Fall lines are focusing on the exact opposite of what the Summer brought. Gone are the glossy neon nails ladies everywhere have been sporting since the weather turned warm. This new season is all about being dull – dull colors, dull nails, and perhaps dull moods?

Remember when Vicky Beckham (yes, I like to call her Vicky because we’re tight like that) was photographed wearing slate gray nail polish and we all cringed? Well, we better all get used to it, because gray is back in a big way this Fall, along with navy blues, blacks, and deep plums. And with an emphasis on color rather than on shine, most of these shades are being released with a matte finish. Even light shades such as winter white are lackluster. And for those of you who love turning to reds as the air becomes more crisp, some lines like Zoya have even created a polish just for you.

So, if you’re a fan of the matte look, or you want to try it on just for laughs, there are a couple of ways you can get in on the fun.

1) Several companies are releasing purely matte lines for the Fall. Here are some of the most popular:

- OPI is revamping some of its older shades to be resold without their shiny finish, including Alpine Snow, Russian Navy, and You Don’t Know Jacques, complete list on OPI.com (these shades will also still be available in their glossy versions). Range from $7-9.

- The company, Zoya, is marketing their MatteVelvet Collection of shades of gray and red. Best of all – Zoya’s polishes are formaldehyde free. Zoya.com $6.

- Knockout Cosmetics (koknockout.com) has a nice range of matte polishes. The price is a little steep at $19, but they have a wondrous turquoise that I’m dying to get my hands on.

- The original matte nail polish – ManGlaze. Yes, you heard me – ManGlaze, like men really need to start wearing polish now? $6.66 online and $13 in stores. Manglaze.com

2) If you don’t want to waste $$$ on multiple polishes and want to use the ones you already own, just spring for a mattifying topcoat. Many companies like Knockout are making mattifiers, but the most popular one currently on the market is “Matte About You” by Essie $10, check it out at Essie.com.

- The website has an interactive demo that allows you to see what certain colors look like matte and gives ideas on how to get creative with the matte top coat.

- This topcoat can be used with any polish to create a matte finish.

3) Some people have suggested nail polish remover mattifies your nails. Either quickly dip your nails into a cupful of polish remover or lightly stroke on a little remover with a paintbrush (try to avoid using a makeup brush, you don’t want acetone remnants on your face). I haven’t personally tried this method; it will take some patience, and definitely several tries to apply it without removing the color. It may just be easier to go for the Essie.

So, what do you think, ladies? Is this matte fad worth a try, or will you be sticking to your trusty shine and color? Personally, I think I’ll be giving it a go with the Vicky Beckham gray.

Orgasm. Fire down below. Deep Throat. NARS cosmetics has never shied away from using controversial labels for its products, and this season’s collection is no exception. For those of you not familiar with Vladimir Nobokov’s controversial novel, Lolita is a character that has become synonymous with youth and seduction. And now, NARS says you too can be sexually precocious with the Fall collection that emphasizes sultry eyes and enticing lips. The collection reflects, according to Francois Nars, “the modern woman – very fragile and strong at the same time.” – i.e. the independent woman who has retained her “girlish innocence.”

Now, here’s where the desi gene will kick in and you’ll begin to question whether or not such dark colors will look good on your skin tone. Don’t fall into that trap. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of attitude to embrace bold colors. Remember when black nail polish went mainstream and we were all more than a little nervous that we would look ridiculous? I now see desi women everywhere rocking the shade, myself included. You just need to wear the right products together. Remember – dark eyes with a light lip or dark lips with a light eye. Any other combination and you will look more Moulin Rouge than Lolita.

With NARS’ heavily pigmented products, you can apply the shade as light as you wish or build it up. So no matter what the skin tone, you’ll be able to experiment with any of these products. The new Lolita Collection includes:

Eyeshadows:

Silk Road Duo $32

This Icy pink / Rose gold with golden flecks shadow duo was created to mimic “Damask fabrics” i.e. all the wondrous silks that, centuries ago, came down the greatest trade route of all time.

Indian Summer Duo $32

It seems cosmetics companies think gold = Indian. Better than associating us with all the other negative press, right? Frosted champagne / Mustard seed. A perfect combination to suit the Fall – changing leaves under the warm sun.

Brumes Duo $32

This is my personal favorite as I love to experiment with smokey eyes. Matte charcoal / Blue slate.

Mekong Single $22

Espresso infused with gold. What is more Autumn-y than brown and gold leaves? Great for the outer crease.

Lipstick:

Fast Ride $24

Remember Chanel’s “Vamp” Lipstick of the 90s? Don’t be afraid – while this may look like a replica, when applied it’s actually a Sheer Mulberry – perfect for transitioning into Autumn colors.

Nailpolish:

Tokaïdo Express $16

If you’re a fan of dark polishes, this one is for you. Every Fall, there seems to be a new shade of black in town (recall previous years of black with red specks and black with blue specks). This year, try out Black amethyst infused with gold.

The Lolita Collection is available online at narscosmetics.com now and in August at stores everywhere that carry NARS Cosmetics. So, what do you ladies think? Pass or must-have? Sound off in the comments section below.

Every so often, major names in the fashion world create lines or products that they market as “inspired by” India. In 2008 the ready-to-wear collection by Jean Paul Gautier for Hermes featured Nehru jackets, tunics and sari variations. Later that summer, we were tempted by the vivid jewel tones of nail polishes from OPI’s India Collection, of which names like “Royal Rajah Ruby” and “Curry Up Don’t be Late!” were quick to intrigue and even quicker to impress upon application. But, then there are occasions when lines are released and one is confused as to whether the reference to India is really due to Desi influence or simply a marketing tool. Such is the case with the new Indian Summer Collection by Stila Cosmetics. While some of the articles seem promising, it is difficult to find a true connection with Indian culture other than the aggressive advertising that is being done to dupe the public into believing the products they are using are truly “ethnic.”

The line by Stila is said to be infused with real 24 karat gold. Now I find this both fascinating and amusing for several reasons. As Desis, I’m sure most of you (especially those currently planning their weddings) are well aware that gold prices are increasing exponentially even as you read this. I’m curious to know, exactly how much of an “infusion” of 24kt gold do these products actually have at an average of $25 an item? Given this information I assume there is simply a sliver of gold in each product, microscopic even, with the rest of the gold present in the makeup attributed simply to color manipulation. The website goes on to claim “gold is a known antioxidant and has ant-microbial properties.” Are we to believe this tiny sliver of gold present in the products is actually going to fix our skin too? Interesting. However, keep in mind my calculation of the amount of gold in the products is pure speculation. There may be half a pound of gold in there for all I know. In that case, I’m not sure how I feel about smearing metal on my face. But, that is a different story altogether.

Moving on past the ingredients of the products, here’s what you’ll find in this summer’s collection (descriptions next to product names are from the company itself, and are not the opinion of Lipstick Masala):

24kt Gloss $22: A vitamin-rich luxury lip gloss infused with genuine 24kt gold. Available in five brilliant shades. (pictured below)

Lipstick Masala Breakdown:

If you can look past the trying-too-hard packaging with strategically placed bindis, a few of these products may be worth a try. The lip glosses have gold undertones that will look good against most Desi skin, as we are generally warm-toned. I’m curious about the consistency, however, and would perhaps use one to dab on top of another lipstick rather than use by itself. They may be a nice addition to those looking for a gold-shimmered gloss for use at weddings. I’m also interested in trying the Mango Lip and Cheek Stain, as coral greatly complements olive/tan skin.

The Golden Noir smudge pot does not seem to be a jet-black color, the gold specks will most likely make it a more brown shade upon application. If you feel you want something less harsh than the kajal you regularly use, you should give this a shot. The other products in the line seem uninspired, especially the eye shadow palette. There is nothing unique or exciting about the color selection, although, like the lip glosses the gold undertones in the products may be complementary to our skin tones.

The collection was supposed to be released both online and in stores in May, but for now has only made an appearance on stilacosmetics.com. I’ve been to three Sephora stores in my area and have been unsuccessful in locating the products. Employees there have, in so many words, informed me that Stila is having internal issues and therefore shipments to stores have been delayed. I’ve been told to check back in two weeks or to order the products online. So, if you feel you absolutely must try out this new collection, your only option is through the Stila website now and soon the Sephora website. Both companies have decent return policies, i.e. dissatisfied customers will be promptly refunded. Details on the return policies are listed on the respective websites.

Overall, I personally feel the entire collection is boring. Yawn Yawn Yawn. India is such a beautiful place with such exuberant colors and traditions. I don’t see any of that really portrayed in the collection – they really missed the mark with this one. But, then again, I don’t know everything, I’d love to hear your opinion. What do you think, will you be rushing out to try this new line? Let us know in the comments section and the poll below.

You know the phrase, “less is more?” Apparently my cheeks have never heard of it. No matter what style of makeup I choose, light or dark, a pink cheek is no doubt always a part of my repertoire (although, I’m sure my sisters would like to interject here and say my look is more Raggedy Ann than a healthy flush). What can I say, I like a little bit of color – I feel a rosy cheek is the component that ties in all the other made up features of the face. However, sometimes, especially when the weather starts to get warm, I like to tone down the bright pink and reach for something a little more subtle. So, I’m constantly on a search for a product that will give me a soft dewy flushed look (think Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl) without having to apply a perfect combination of tinted moisturizer, cream blush and highlighters. Bobbi Brown’s new line of cheek tints from the Summer 2009 collection aspires to be that product.

Now, plenty of cosmetic lines have come out with stick blushes, so why should I bother with these? The Bobbi Brown salespeople claim their product is different. Why? I’m told the color is sheer/translucent – which means that even girls who hate wearing blush will like the effect of this cheek tint – but the coverage is buildable for those who need a little more pigment. Also, the moisturizers in the blush supposedly leave the skin looking dewy and fresh just in time for the summer.

As I passed by the Bobbi Brown counter today I tried on the new line that Bobbi Brown claims is “wearable, easy and look[s] good on everyone.”

Here’s the breakdown:

- The sheer color cheek tints are available for $22 in any of 6 different shades: Sheer Blackberry, Sheer Coral, Sheer Lilac, Sheer Mauve, Sheer Pink and Sheer Raspberry.

- They are small enough that you can throw them in your purse for touch-ups later in the day.

- Upon first swipe, the color was indeed “sheer” and almost sank completely into my skin leaving simply a vaseline-esque sheen on my face – not greasy, but not exceptionally flattering either. After a few more swipes I saw that the color was buildable but only up to a certain point – this one is definitely for the girls who don’t like to wear too much makeup or for fairer skinned girls. The best way to apply would be to dot the tint onto the cheekbones and then spread in a tapping motion rather than smearing. The more you rub, the more the color will fade, so use your ring finger (allows for the most control) and pat lightly.

- The face doesn’t feel very sticky in spite of the emollient nature of the product, however, the lasting power is questionable as it feels it will slip off. Oily-skinned girls should avoid this product.

- The tints can be doubled for use as sheer lipsticks (very sheer).

The Nautical Collection also carries limited edition sheer lip glosses for $20 in Cabana Coral, Marina Pink, Popsicle and Sailor (mostly different shades of pink). Unlike my cheeks, I’m truly a fan of sheer lips, but I would recommend readers to pass on these glosses – you can find the same colors with a similar consistency and lasting power for less than $4 in the Vita Gloss line by the drugstore brand, Bonne Belle.

If anyone has tried the Nautical Collection, let us know how it’s worked out for you. Overall, I was personally less than impressed, and not just because of my love for deeper pigmented blushes. I feel the cheek tints are definitely not as innovative a product as Bobbi Brown employees claim. Come on Bobbi, stop recycling and repackaging old ideas and trying to sell them to us as the next best product! Your client base deserves better than that!

Spring is here. This means flip-flops, t-shirts and cherry blossoms. But, most importantly, this means being able to try out the fabulous new colors that have appeared in Spring makeup lines. In order to market the latest color trends, cosmetics companies are both toying with new tints and also repackaging old pigments to seem original. Regardless, I love Spring makeup, and like all the seasons, there are some shades that I absolutely adore and some colors that I plan on staying far away from despite how “in” they are.

Ladies, go ahead and pack away the dark eye, lip and nail choices that were hot in the Winter. To reflect the changing weather outside, the fun flirty colors of the Spring are lighter and brighter. Some shades are probably already in your makeup bag, while the new “it” colors of the season may require a little loosening of the purse strings as you peruse the counters at your local drug and department stores.

The first set of colors belongs in the nudes category. Luckily for us Desi girls, whose skin tones range from fair to dark, this set of colors will suit all of us. So, break out your beiges, taupes and creams. Also, according to the fashion world, bronze is back in – when exactly was it ever out? I know I never stopped wearing bronze, how about you?

You’re probably thinking “neutral colors are not fun and flirty” – hold your horses I’ll get to the good stuff in a minute! But, first, don’t be put off by the word “nudes,” there are many advantages to these colors being “in” again.

- The term “nudes” encompasses a great range of shades, from fawn to pinks. This means that every skin tone can wear the same general color, just slightly adjusted to meet each girl’s needs. Go for a lip color with shimmer (check out MAC Viva Glam V lipglass) or a high shine nude gloss from Clinique (we like Tenderheart).

-For the girls that hate wearing a lot of makeup, these colors are perfect. You can rock the taupe eye shadows with a little bronze in the crease and you’re good to go without looking too done up.

- Also, with the other, brighter colors of the season, you will definitely need nude to balance your face out or else you run the risk of ending up in our Makeup Fail section.

Now, for the fun stuff. Every season there are a few colors that continue on to the next one. These bold colors of the Spring are expected to sizzle into the Summer. Wherever you turn you will be seeing every shade of purple you can imagine, from lavender to plum as well as a wide assortment of pinks for each skin tone. If these colors don’t excite you, then you may be inclined to try out the corral and blood orange pigments that have made their way onto runways and into your local Sephora.

What I love: I am a big fan of the corral. I know it’s slightly jarring and a bit intimidating if you don’t like bright colors, but it looks absolutely gorgeous when paired with the right eye makeup. As someone who finds it difficult to find colors that suit my tone, I’m excited because corral looks good with both yellow and pink undertones. The color is great enough that you only need mascara and a little eyeliner (bronze!). If you really want eye shadow, I’d lean toward the nudes on the rest of your face to complement this one, we have a couple in mind but we’d love to hear your suggestions on great basic neutral eye shadows in your makeup kits.

What I hate: Purple. I REALLY hate it. It’s fine in clothes. But, purple lipstick? No no no no

no no! It is very difficult to look good with purple lips, I don’t care what your skin tone is. Purple eye shadows can be carried off when used the right way and in moderation (think blended with three other eye shadows). But, for those that have trouble picking the right shades, I would pass this one by. Lilac eye shadow on darker skin is not flattering, same goes for deep purple on really fair skin – please don’t end up looking like New York from Flavor of Love! As much as I dislike this purple make up trend, I have a feeling I’m going to be seeing it everywhere I turn this season.

If you’re wondering where to start on picking the right shades of these colors for your skin tones, here’s a basic guide.

- For the fair-skinned Desi, reach for the lighter spectrum of these colors, i.e. lavender for purple, pastel and bubble gum pink, and sheerer corals.

- If you have a darker complexion, check out plum lip glosses, lipsticks and eye shadows, deep pink blushes, and rich blood orange lipsticks (hopefully not together!).

- And, if you’re medium-skinned you have the luxury of trying all types of colors, along with lilac and rose shades, which are the middle ground between pastel and bold.

Finally, bronze eyeliner suits everyone! We’ve heard Lancôme makes a great one. If you’re on a budget, check out shades by L’Oreal.

Take our poll and tell us what YOU think of the Purple craze.
