This article was first published in the Express Tribune, Pakistan on 4/16/10. It was written by Lipstick Masala for the column Beauty and the Brush.

The advent of spring coincides with the start of the wedding season, and mehndi invitations begin to arrive by the dozen. Panic sets in as one frantically runs to and fro from tailors and/or designers in a desperate attempt to have them sew knockoffs of designs from collections shown at fashion weeks. There is an equal frenzy in browbeating mothers into providing matching jewelery.

But when it comes to the “defining moment” that is applying makeup, most women devote relatively miniscule time and reach for the cliched black kajal and pink lipstick.

Why not break with worn out traditions and dare to embrace the bold accents and styles presented on runways this spring? Today’s beauty trends reflect the vibrant hues of nature – jewel-toned eyes mimicking oleander trees and azure skies, fruity lips evoking images of peach-lined fruit stands. Remember those bright purple and yellow eyeliners you pondered at the local Agha’s or Al-Fatah but elected in favor of your go-to black? Return to the store and grab the colorful liners. And while you’re in revolutionary mode, seriously think about tossing out your flatiron.

Those addicted to the smoky eye look, pass over standard grays and blacks. Instead, play with peacock colors and the remarkable hues of dyed gladiolas lining entrances of mehndi events. Spring 2010 New York Fashion Week revealed models experimenting with striking eye shadows. So, be creative – it’s spring after all! Sweep turquoise pigment on your eyelid but line your under-eye with purple for contrast. Mehndis are an occasion when you can be adventurous with vivid colours!

A word for those that shy away from too much makeup; opt for those colored liners we mentioned above. A sapphire blue pencil is the perfect replacement for black. But here’s the twist, don’t circle your eyes in a passe Kareena Kapoor look. Apply color only to your lower lash line, leaving your lids bare. Your eyes will appear bigger and the simple pop of colour will keep you looking trendy.

As most fashionistas already know, pairing bright eyes with dark lips is a great beauty gaffe. You don’t want to be mistaken for a 1980s Lollywood actress!! Leave the dark lipstick and even the standard nude ones in your make-up kit. This season, cosmetics companies are embracing the color peach. A sprightlier version of pink, peach complements almost any skin tone. Add some shimmer or wear your peach glossy, but avoid mattes. You want to look fresh, not aged.

Mehndis invariably involve dancing, and you’ll be struggling to contain your locks while you step to the latest Imran Khan single. Here’s some welcome news – the classic up do has been updated. Gone are the stick straight ponytails and distinct puff resting atop your head. It’s time to stop straightening your strands into oblivion and start working with your hair’s natural texture.

Ask your salon to style your tresses into a messy bun at the nape of your neck with a few loose side-swept tendrils to soften the look. If your hair isn’t naturally wavy, make sure to use a volumizing mousse so your ‘do doesn’t fall flat. If buns don’t appeal to you, sport a celebrity favorite – pull your hair to one side and loosely twist into a fishtail braid, or khajuri choti.

Before stepping out of the house, polish your look with a sweep of peachy-pink blush on your cheeks to enhance the glowing spring look. On a parting note – remember to take along your lipstick for touch-ups. Warm weather and the delectable mehndi cuisine will wear your lip color off faster than you can say “balle”.

.

Last Spring, I chopped off nearly ten inches of the hair I had so painstakingly grown out for two years. It was a bit drastic, and I wept for my lost locks for days. But, it was a much-needed change. For me, Spring is about reinvention. Even though I trim my hair several times a year, the Spring appointment with my stylist is the one where I experiment with new lengths, shapes and colors. After the last remnants of winter have faded away, I embrace a new look, a new season and a way to set the trend for how I plan to look for the rest of the year.

For those of you that, like me, have grown weary of your signature coif, there are dozens of trends you can try out in the Spring 2010 season. However, before you arrive at your salon with a ripped out magazine page of Reese Witherspoon’s new haircut, you must keep one important detail in mind – your face shape. Thousands of ladies each year are on the receiving end of a disastrous haircut, not because their stylist was snip happy with the scissors, but because they didn’t realize how different their bone structure was from said actress in the magazine photo.

So, ladies, before you venture out to reinvent yourself, here’s a quick breakdown on how to choose the right cut for your face type. You don’t want to spend the rest of the summer in a ponytail hiding the catastrophe that is your new hair ‘do.

Although there are dozens of face types, the four most common face shapes are: long/oval, round, heart and square.

If you have a long/oval shaped face (think Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Beckinsale, Giselle Bundchen):

Those who have long/oval shaped faces are lucky in that they can pull off a number of hairstyles. The key though, is to create the illusion of width in order to draw attention away from the length of the face.

To create width:

- Never part your hair down the middle; it will make your face appear longer than it actually is. Part your hair to the side to soften your look.

- If you have wavy hair, put down the straightening iron. Wavy hair adds volume to the face and again, gives an illusion of width.

- If you have naturally straight hair, try longer, side swept bangs to break up the length straight hair adds to your face.

How much to chop off:

- Try to avoid excessively long hair, but if you must grow it out, kept the front layers much shorter than the ones in the back (think of your hair as a V shape). The shorter layers will frame your face and you will still have the length to play with at the back.

- Long/Oval faced girls look great with bobs. Because the hairline hits right at the chin, another illusion of width is created.

- As we said earlier, go for side-swept bangs, or even blunt bangs at the eyebrow as they give an illusion of width by creating a break in the face.

If you have a round face (think Renee Zellweger and Drew Barrymore):

Round-faced women generally have softer features that need to be angled with the right cut. It is important to create a style that gives the illusion of having a longer face and slightly sharper features.

To create length:

- The more to the side that you part your hair, the more it will draw attention to your face shape. Try to part your hair in the center to create an illusion of length. If you absolutely hate a line down the center of your hair, then part your tresses slightly off center but no more than that.

- If you have long hair, ask your stylist to give you long layers that start below your chin. Anything shorter than that will draw attention to the width near your cheekbones and temples.

- If you have short hair, have your stylist take weight off near the ends to give you a softer, wispier look. The volume should be near the top of your head, not at the bottom.

How much to chop off:

- Round-faced girls tend to look better with longer cuts as the length draws attention away from the width of the face and defines the features.

- Stay away from any blunt cuts or bangs, as they will make your face look rounder.

- If you want bangs, stick to ones that are side-swept. If you absolutely MUST have straight bangs that sit on your forehead, make sure they are wispy and light and not heavy and blunt. See that they sit slightly below the brows to give a lengthening effect.

If you have a heart-shaped face (think Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Love Hewitt):

Women with heart-shaped faces are the luckiest of the bunch, as most hairstyles they choose will work with their bone structure. Because your face is widest at the forehead, the key is to create volume near the bottom of the hair rather than at the top.

To create volume near the ends:

- If you love short hair, try out a chin length bob with layers that fall near the ends rather than near your ears. You will rock a blunt cut.

- If you are a fan of long hair, ask for layers that fall at or below your cheekbones.

- Try to avoid any really choppy haircuts unless your hair is super long. Choppy layers should fall much below your chin as you’re trying to create volume near the chin area.

- You look great with both side-swept and bangs that sweep the brow.

How much to chop off:

- Go ahead and play with whichever length of hair you like. Heart-shaped faces look great in bobs, shoulder-length and long hairstyles.

If you have a square face (think Salma Hayek and Rosario Dawson):

Ladies with square faces generally have strong jaw lines. Cheeks and jaws are generally the same width or near the same width as the forehead. The key to choosing a hairstyle for square faces is to soften the angles of the face.

To soften your features:

- Keep your hair wavy or curly if you can. The natural body will help soften your jaw line.

- Try to stay away from any choppy or blunt hairstyles, as they will draw attention to your jaw.

- Stick to hairstyles that are soft and airy, with wispy layers that start at or below your cheeks to soften the angles.

- Try to avoid blunt bangs. Longer, side-swept bangs actually soften your face so go for those.

- Part your hair to the side to additionally soften your features.

- Avoid severely pulled back ponytails. These will only draw attention to your square bone structure.

How much to chop off:

Women with square faces tend to look best with longer hair. Try face-framing layers and side-swept bangs. If you must have short hair, make sure you have a little wave or curl in your hair to counteract any harsh attention to your jaw line.

If you’re not sure what face type you have, ask your stylist to help you out – after all that’s what they’re there for. Hopefully you have a stylist that will caution you if you’re going against what will look good with your face type. If not, time to shop for another one – I recommend yelp.com!

Good luck ladies, I’ll be back with an update after my own Friday haircut appointment!

I was so cold I could barely enjoy the huge fireworks display over the Potomac River. A decade later, I choose to avoid any outdoor festivities and instead stay inside with my friends, in the warmth of central heating and a comfy couch under my behind. This year, instead of picking out which down jacket will keep me the coziest, my biggest dilemma is whether or not to coordinate my sparkly shirt with dark lips or eyes.

For those of you contemplating a smokey eye look for New Year’s Eve but not comfortable with the technique, I’ve broken down a basic tutorial that’s both quick and easy. Don’t be afraid! What’s great about the smokey look is that you can adapt it to any color, and best of all, it doesn’t have to be perfectly tidy! The concept of “smokey” doesn’t apply to one specific look or color, rather, it is the blending technique used to “smoke out” an eye shadow. So, go ahead and use any combination you wish to!

This tutorial should take practiced hands about 5 minutes and beginners no more than 10-15. Don’t worry about perfecting each step – when it’s time to clean up and bring the look together, we will!

.

What You’ll Need:

Prep: under eye cream, concealer

Shadows*: 4 = brown, black, shimmery gold or copper and light beige shimmer for highlighting the brow bone

Pencils: brown and black

Tools*: Small eye shadow brush, smudge brush, Ponytail (blending) brush, concealer brush, q-tips

Mascara

*The reason I use brown and black together is that brown helps to blend and also softens the harsh contrast of black on the face. Brown and black together also give desi skin tones a warmer, soft look. You can substitute these shades for whatever you wish, just remember to use the darker shadows on the outer corners and the lighter ones on the inner lid!

*If you don’t have some the tools you can substitute them with other items. For example, if you don’t have a smudge brush you can use the sponge that comes on the back end of an eyeliner brush, and if you don’t have a concealer brush use your fingers! The ponytail brush (or blending brush) is hard to substitute, if you have a large fluffy shadow brush that should work as a replacement.

.

Steps:

.

1) Make sure the eye area is clean. Use your under eye cream to prep the area.

.

2) Using your concealer brush (or your finger if you don’t have one) spread your concealer on your lid as a base for your shadow to neutralize the color of your skin and to provide lasting powder to your eye makeup. If you prefer to use another primer, go ahead and use it here. I used TimeBalm concealer in medium/dark and Nars concealer brush.

.

3) Take the brown eye pencil and draw a thick line on your upper lash line. Don’t worry about it being crooked; just make sure to get it in close to the lash line and between the lashes. Lift up your lid slightly and line the inner rim (make sure not to poke yourself!) – this process is called tight lining - it gives a fuller look to your lashes. I used Sephora Khol expert in “Brun Perfect.”

..

4) Now, take your smudge brush (or replacement tool) and smudge the liner in an upward motion towards your crease (where your eyeball meets the brow bone). You should end up with the liner darkest near your lash line and lightest near the top of your lid (don’t go all the way up to the brown bone). I used the Sephora Professionnel smudge brush.

.

5) Take your chocolate brown eye shadow and using the small shadow brush, apply it to the outer third of your lid. Don’t worry about messiness or accuracy; we’ll blend it out in a bit. I used Clinique high impact eye shadow quad in “Toast of the Town” and the MAC 213 shadow brush.

.

6) Next, using the same brush, pick up the black shadow and apply it to the outer edge and along the crease as shown below. Your “V” should be in line with the end of your eyebrow (note the pink dots in the photo below). I used MAC “print” shadow.

.

.

7) Grab your ponytail brush, or blending brush and begin to smooth out the lines. Use a light hand. The best way to do this is: on the lid where the shadows meet, switch between side-to-side sweeps and circular motions and gently buff out any visible lines that you see. The key is to blend blend blend. Then, on the crease use more of a side-to-side (windshield wiper) motion to soften the harshness of the black. Again, don’t worry about being too messy; we’ll clean it up. I used MAC’s 224 brush.

.

.

.

Use your small shadow brush and pick up some of the lighter beige color and sweep it along your brown bone to highlight it. I used MAC “Naked Lunch” shadow.

.

9) Take your ponytail brush and gently blend out the highlighter shadow so the black shadow underneath fades into the highlight.

.

10) At this point, you will see shadow fallout underneath your eyes and on the side of your eyes near your temples. Take your q-tip and slightly dampen it with water. Clean up the side of your eye so you get back the V shape. Use the tip to soften and blend the edges so they don’t look too sharply defined.

.

.

11) Take another q-tip and clean the bottom of your eyes under your lower lashes.

.

12) Now, apply the concealer under your eyes. We wait to do this until this step because if you apply concealer earlier, you will end up having to remove it anyway because of fallout from your darker shadows.

.

13) Using your small shadow brush, pick up a little of the same black you used for the crease and tap off the excess on your hand so you have no more shadow fallout. Brush a thin line connecting the outer V to your lower lash line. Continue to line under your eye until your lashes end.

.

.

14) Soften and blend the line on your lower lashes using a q-tip.

.

15) Take your black eye pencil and line your inner rim. Then use the small shadow brush and pat down the liner with the same black shadow you just used. This will soften the look and help your liner stay on longer. I have not used liner on my upper lids in this tutorial because it was a bit much for me personally. The shadow and tight lining of your inner rims is enough to attract attention to your eyes. But, if you feel you need a little more oomph, add the liner after step 17 before you apply your mascara. I used Sephora Waterproof Kohl et Contour in “Keep Black.”

.

.

16) Almost done. The final shadow step is to add a slight glimmer to the center where your lid catches the light. Your best choice would be to use a golden/bronze shadow here that is luminous but not over the top glittery. The gold/bronze accents the brown and most desi skin tones (contrary to popular belief, I think very few of us look good in silver!). Tap your shadow brush into the pan and then apply to the center of your lid from the crease to the lash line. If you feel you need to blend it you can, but this color should melt into the others after a few minutes by itself. I used MAC “Woodwinked” shadow.

.

17) Using the same shadow, line the inner V of your eye for a little extra pop.

.

18) Apply Mascara. Remember to clean the inner eye where the shadow gathers with a q-tip! I used Imju Fiberwig mascara.

.

Et Voilà! You’re all done! Just remember, if you’re going with dark eyes keep your lips toned down – nude lips look the best!

It’s almost the most wonderful time of the year -New Year’s Eve – new beginnings, clean slates, and this year – a new decade. Because it’s the holidays and I know you have better things to do than listen to my ramblings, I’ll get straight down to business. For those of you heading out to the club or a friend’s party, you’ll surely want to get the right kind of makeup look to go with your sequined outfits. Later this week we’ll be sharing a quick basic smokey eye for those that want to bedazzle on Thursday night. For now, here’s a tutorial on how to get the perfect red lip without feathering, bleeding and smudging.

Choosing the perfect red color:

Many artists will tell you that women with warm undertones (most desis) look better with orange or brown based reds and that cooler undertones match up better with blue-based lipsticks. This guideline works great for majority of Caucasian women. However, I don’t think this “rule” is completely applicable when it comes to desi skin tones. Some of us are not yellow enough to wear orange-based lipsticks and some of us are too pale to pull off blue-based reds. I personally am warm-toned yet use a red lipstick that MAC labels as “blue-based” that looks absolutely fabulous on me.

You will probably never hear me say this again, but in terms of red lipstick – I say if you are somewhat comfortable with makeup, ignore the “rules” when it comes to picking a color and go with your instinct. However, if you are a red lipstick newbie, then start out by following the basic guidelines and see how those colors feel on you before experimenting. Go to the store and try on a variety of shades, the one that warms your complexion (i.e. you’re not left looking sallow, washed out or ashy) is the one to go with.

Consistency: Lipsticks come in many different textures. I personally love matte red lipsticks because it gives one’s look a touch of old Hollywood glamour (think Rita Hayworth).

Matte: Not good for extremely dry lips. Best for women in their 20s/30s as they have less wrinkles around the lips.

Creamy: Good for mature skins and dry skin types.

Glossy: Great for all skin types and ages but doesn’t last as long. Too much gloss can also look scary in red, so better to stick to matte and creamy formulations.

How to wear:

-	If you are going for a red lip look, remember to keep the rest of the face light! You want to look sophisticated, not like you belong in the Moulin Rouge.
-	In our mothers’ day it was considered proper to match lipstick shades with your nails. This is no longer the case. Paint your nails a color that complements the red, not matches it. Try one of the black shades from OPI. If you must paint your nails red too, make sure the color matches exactly – avoid wearing two different shades of red.

- Don’t match your red lipstick with your red clothes. This look is dated and overkill – we’re all guilty of it! Again, choose a color that complements the red rather than matches it, like black, white, nude. You don’t want to look overdone. If you feel you must wear a red outfit with your red lipstick, coordinate carefully: 1) Make sure the color matches perfectly 2) Figure out the right clothing item to pair it with – red lipstick with red dress: dated, but doable… red lipstick with red sweater? this look is not just dated – it’s antiquated. Match up the lipstick instead with your purse or your shoes.

.

And finally: Achieving the Perfect Bold Red Lip Look.

You may be thinking, “What’s the big deal about applying red lipstick, it takes two seconds” Sure, it takes two seconds if you want it to look sloppy and fade within the hour. The key ingredient to a great red lip is a result that is crisp and polished and doesn’t wear off easily (think Marilyn Monroe versus the aunty at the wedding with a red ring around her lips and the rest of her lipstick on her biryani fork).

This tutorial uses matte lipstick because that’s my favorite, but you can use a creamy lip color to achieve the same effect. Please excuse the yellow tinge in the photos – the lighting in my bathroom is awful!

What you will need:

.

Blotting powder, concealer, chapstick, lipstick, lip liner, makeup remover (non-oily), powder brush, concealer brush, q-tips and toilet paper (3 pcs).

Steps:

.

1) Make sure your lips are clean and dry.

2) Bold colors like red draw attention to and accentuate your lips, so it’s important to make sure your mouth is well moisturized. If you have time, we recommend exfoliating your lips to remove any flaky winter buildup (click HERE for more info).

3) Apply a nice thick layer of chapstick to your lips and let it soak in for a few minutes. Moisturizing helps the lipstick glide on better and plumps up the lips.

4) Blot your lips against a piece of toilet paper to remove any excess. This will allow your lips to remain soft without being greasy.

5) Apply a thin layer of your concealer or foundation over your lips. This provides 1) a base for your lipstick to stick to so it won’t fade easily 2) Most women have some kind of pigment in their lips, especially desi girls. The concealer helps cover the pigment, providing a blank canvas for the lipstick’s true color to show.

6) Lip liner: Tip 1: If you’re using your pencil to only outline your lips, then it is important you find a liner that matches your lipstick color perfectly, or when the lipstick wears off you will be left with a noticeable ring around your mouth. Tip 2: If you are using the liner to liner your entire mouth (as I am in this post) you can choose a lighter color if the red is too dark for you or a darker liner if the red is too light. In this tutorial I am using a darker red to warm up the lipstick color I am using.

Begin by lining the outer edges of your mouth. (Some artists feel it is easier to start from the center of the mouth in, but I personally feel this is easier for me as it gives me a guideline right off the bat). Then, fill in your entire lip so that your whole mouth is covered with lip liner. This provides yet another base for your lipstick to stick to and accentuates the color.

7) Apply the first coat of your lipstick over the liner. Don’t worry about not being accurate, as we will clean it up in a bit.

Using another piece of toilet paper, blot your lipstick.

9) Take the last piece of toilet paper and pull the two layers apart. This is a trick I learned from makeup artist Eve Pearl and it works fabulously. Place one half against your lips, dip your powder brush into your powder, and lightly dust it against your lips. The paper barrier will prevent your lips from getting too powdery and what comes through will give your lipstick long-lasting power.

10) Now, reach for your lipstick and apply a second coat. Again, don’t care about being perfect – we’ll be cleaning it in the next step.

11) Almost done – it’s clean up time. The key to a red lip is clean edges, which can be achieved in two ways – makeup remover and concealer.

If you use makeup remover:
-	Fill a cap with remover that is not oil-based or moisturizing (the oil will make your lipstick smear and slide).
-	Dip your concealer brush in the remover and then swipe along the edges of your lip line to clear away any stray red.

If you use concealer:
-	Tap your brush into your concealer and wipe away any red along the edges of your lip line. The concealer acts like a great eraser.
-	If you choose to use concealer, remember to blend the concealer in using a q-tip so you don’t have an obvious line around your mouth.

12) Et voilà! You’re done. Just remember to pair a bright red lip with minimal makeup – most artists generally only use blush and mascara, but if you’re a fan of eyeliner you can use it on your upper lid to add a little oomph. Anything more than that will leave you looking like a clown.

.

For most of us, winter has finally arrived. Whether you love the season or the cold makes you depressed and homesick, one thing is for sure: winter wreaks havoc on your hair! Wind, dry air, and central heating can cause dryness and split ends. Here are some of my tips for keeping your hair luscious when the temperatures drop.

.

Deep Treatments

Extreme cold can suck the moisture out of your hair: combat this by applying deep conditioning treatments to keep your hair soft and healthy! Some ideas…

1) My favorite store-bought conditioner is Lush Henna & Jasmine Fluff Eaze (Click HERE for link) It smells divine and makes my hair feel amazing!

2) To add extra moisture to your usual conditioner, add some honey. I roughly use the proportion 1 part honey/2 parts conditioner. Make sure you mix the two before applying it to your hair. I know it sounds sticky but it’s a quick fix and works really well!

3) If you have a bit of extra time, why not consider making your own hair treatment?

Natural Hair Treatment

- 1 tsp olive oil (or whatever you prefer: almond and coconut also work well)
- 1.5 tbsp yogurt
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp coffee (optional, but it brings out the dark tones of brunette hair)
- 1 egg

If you’re worried about egg smells, you can add a drop or two of some essential oil (e.g. rosemary, lavender – whatever you like!) Mix the coffee with boiling water, add the oil and honey, and heat in the microwave for 30 seconds. When it cools, add the egg and the yogurt. Apply to your hair and leave on for as long as you like – then rinse and shampoo!

4) Do you suffer from dry scalp? Try this…
- Massage some oil into your scalp
- Prepare a bowl of conditioner and brown sugar. After shampooing the oil out, scrub the conditioner/brown sugar mixture into your scalp
- Rinse
(Make sure you use a weak conditioner with the brown sugar if you’re prone to an oily scalp or if you don’t usually use conditioner on your scalp).

.

.

Protect Your Hair

We often forget to protect our hair from the brutal wind and dry air. Personally, I look ridiculous in hats! So I wear a knitted snood: it doubles to keep you warm and to keep your hair from flying all over the place. Also consider putting your hair in braids and buns or tucking it into your coat if you just can’t deal with hats!

.

.

Limit Heat Styling

I know you may be addicted to your blow dryer or flat iron; winter is shaadi season and you want to look your best! But this is the time to treat your hair gently. If you simply must look perfectly primped, consider using rollers instead.

- Use big velcro rollers for loose waves. If done properly, it can look like you have just had a blow dry. Comb your hair while it is damp (be very gentle, your hair can break easily when wet) and roll up separate sections. Once you have had a bit of practice, it only takes 10 minutes. I usually leave them in overnight, but you can just take them out in a couple of hours when your hair is dry! For more defined curls, put the rollers in when your hair is quite damp.

- Wrap, snap & go (click HERE for link) curlers are great for messy, tight curls, and are really comfortable to sleep in, as well.

.

Static Control

I’ve never tried this myself, but I’ve heard that if you suffer from static or flyaway hair, you should rub your hair between two dryer sheets.

If you’ve been tuned into any news channel over the past couple of days, you’ve by now surely heard about the fierce snow storm that continues to pound the East Coast of the U.S. Snowmageddon 2009 not only brought with it mountains of ice but has also subjected us to bone-chilling cold temperatures and glacial winds. Yesterday, driven crazy with cabin fever, I strapped on my fur-lined boots and mittens and ventured outside on foot. When I returned, my face was stinging from the brutal weather conditions. Today, I am regretting yesterday’s little adventure as my cheeks are chapped dry and so red that I could pass for Santa Claus’s offspring.

Unfortunately, dry skin does not just make an appearance during a rare snowstorm or two. Many ladies have complained to me recently that the winter air has been causing the skin on their face to tighten up and flake and no lotion or cream seems to be working to restore that moisture. Here is my answer: 1) If you live in a country where you have central heating on all the time, make sure to use a humidifier when you sleep at night – trust me, you will see a difference in your skin within a few days. 2) Don’t overdo it with the rich creams. Exfoliate regularly (for more information click HERE) and remove the dead skin cells on your face. This will help your regular winter lotion/cream penetrate better. If you still feel like you need something a little extra, then go a little heavier, but I feel like most of those result in clogged pores. I prefer treating my face in addition to moisturizing, which brings us to number 3) There are a number of moisturizing masks you can use that will bring your skin relief, my favorite of which is the Oatmeal mask below. It’s fast, easy, and best of all, costs next to nothing.

Regulars of this site are most likely familiar with my affinity with any products containing Oatmeal. Why do I love Oatmeal as an ingredient? Because it’s natural, soothing and cleanses the skin without irritation. Oatmeal contains protein as well as natural fats that help protect the skin’s outermost barrier while lubricating and moisturizing. Also, oats contain gentle ingredients that help cleanse which, along with the lubricants, remove dirt from your pores without stripping your face of its natural oils. Finally, oatmeal is naturally calming and great for both tough and sensitive skins – it’s the reason people soak in oatmeal baths when they have the chicken pox!

Here’s what you need to do:

Tools:

1) Measuring cup

2) Blender

3) Washcloth

Ingredients:

1) 1 banana, preferably one that has ripened and is slightly mushy

2) 1 cup of oatmeal or fresh rolled oats

3) 1/2 cup of milk (you may use less or more depending on your preference for consistency)

.

Method:

1) Put all three ingredients in blender and pulsate until you have a paste-like consistency. It should be easily spreadable on your face but not so liquidy that it drips off. If it’s too runny, add more oats, if it’s not runny enough, add a little more milk.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

2) Pour into a bowl. This recipe makes enough for two people, so pamper yourself with your friend/sister.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

3) Wash your face – it’s important to always clean your skin of makeup before using a mask.

4) Spread mask on your face and leave on for about 10 minutes (15 if you’re very dry and flaky).

5) Lie down while you have this mask on or it may crumble onto your floor if you walk about. Watch tv or just close your eyes and relax.

6) Wet a washcloth with warm water and clean off your face. Because the mask is sticky, it’s easier to use a washcloth but not necessary if you don’t have one.

7) Moisturize with a light lotion if your face feels slightly tight.

Et voilà – you’re done. I know, I look like the Swamp Thing with this mask on, but it’s well worth it. My chapped cheeks are thanking me after tonight’s oatmeal mask session.

Try it out and let us all know how it goes, and if you have any other moisturizing masks you use, share your recipe!

It’s shaadi season. If you’re not already there, most of you will soon be traveling back to the homeland for the winter holidays and over the next month or so will be attending at least two weddings a night. In theory, you will be there to wish the newlyweds well, but in reality you will be checking out members of the opposite sex decked out in their finest shaadi garb while simultaneously whispering with your friends about your competition. But, most importantly, you will be there to see what the bride is wearing. Did she get her jora made by India’s Tarun Tahiliani or did she go with Pakistani designer HSY? What kind of jewelry set is she wearing, is it authentic polki or is it kundun? And finally, who did her makeup – Tariq Amin or a no name?

The makeup, oh the makeup. It seems the bridal makeup industry in the desi world is truly hit or miss – you can look stunning on one event and frightful the next. Artists not familiar with your skin or those who take themselves so seriously they don’t care what you think cause catastrophes that include wrong foundation shades, scary black eyes with dark red lips and shimmer galore. Many ladies put all their faith into their artist, which may work at times, but generally this is a wrong move! Don’t go into your bridal appointment oblivious, ladies – this is the most photographed day of your life (and yes, these pictures really do last forever)! Whether you are in Bhawalpur or Bombay, you must walk into your makeup session with a few crucial pointers in hand.

First, it is extremely important to have a consultation with the artist before you work with them on your big day. You are paying this person, and it is YOUR wedding, not just another addition to their portfolio so you need to feel confident they will listen to you. However, the pointers listed below should be discussed in the consultation not while they are doing your makeup on your wedding day. After all, you don’t want to school/criticize your artist while they are doing their job or you may end up without an artist for the day.

Base:

Always start your makeup with well-primed skin. It will help your makeup last longer and with the right preparation you can prevent the dreaded cakey look.

-	Avoid a moisturizer with SPF at all costs. SPF is slightly whitish, which may be invisible to you but under the flash of the camera it will give you a gray cast and may even change the shade of your foundation.
-	Normal to dry skin: Even if you’re tempted to use a very emollient moisturizer because your skin is on the drier side, try to avoid doing so. Use an oil-free, greaseless moisturizer. You can also use a moisturizing primer that is silicon free.
-	Combination to Oily skin: if your skin tends to feel greasy after applying makeup or you have a problem with your t-zone, try to ignore the instinct to use a mattifying lotion, this makes the foundation harder to glide on. Instead, use a lightweight oil-free moisturizer along with a mattifying silicon primer.

Wait until your lotion has completely dried before continuing to the primer/foundation step, or else your makeup will rub off faster.

Foundation:

This is the most important and difficult step of your makeup; it can make or break your entire look. Once you have the right foundation, the rest should come much more easily. Important things to keep in mind are both color and consistency.

-	I always recommend a bride use her own foundation that she has picked herself and tried beforehand. With women of color it’s very difficult to find a foundation that we are truly happy with. Do you really want to experiment with colors the day of your wedding? In this case, stick with what you know.
-	Many artists recommend that a bride should avoid creamy/luminous foundation. While they look great, they rub off quickly. And, since our weddings last forever it’s important that our makeup stays fresh. Unless you have extremely dry skin, stick to a semi-matte (or matte for very oily skins) formulation.
-	It is true that brides should wear heavier makeup than they do on an everyday basis, but this applies to your features, not your foundation.

If you have good skin, you don’t want to cover it up with a thick foundation. Stick to something with sheer/medium coverage and apply a very light coat just to create a base for the rest of the makeup. Make sure to cover any minor blemishes, because they can and will show in the photos under the bright lights.

If you have problem skin: Many desi makeup artists will apply layer after layer of foundation to cover up your entire face which is completely unecessary. Use a foundation with medium/buildable coverage; a good foundation will cover the blemishes without needing too much product. If needed, you can then build in areas you need more and can use a light hand where your skin is clearer. Harder to cover blemishes can also be covered with concealer of the same color. Remember – too much foundation only accentuates the problems and will give you the dreaded cakey look (plus thick layers will settle into every line imaginable on your face).

-	You can consult with your artist about the color you have brought with you beforehand. If they feel it is not appropriate for the bright lights, they may recommend something else for you to try. I personally always try every foundation with my camera flash to make sure it doesn’t go white in the picture. If you decide to go with a color the artist picks for you, make sure you feel comfortable with it. If the result doesn’t look like you and feels even slightly off, tell him or her. After all, you are paying them!

-	Make sure your artist blends your foundation down into your neck – with the flashes of the camera you don’t want to appear white in the face and brown in the neck!

-	For more information on how to choose the right color foundation for you, click HERE

Concealer:

Great for under eye circles, but can be scary under the camera if not done right.

-	If you are lucky in that you have little to no under eye circles, some artists use your foundation under your eyes set with powder. If you have darker circles, stick to concealer instead, as the foundation might not be thick enough and you will end up with a gray cast under your eyes instead of nicely covered circles.
-	To cover dark circles, make sure you have chosen an appropriate color and consistency for you (for more information click HERE).
-	Remember: concealers create light reflecting pigments (to counter the dark circles) so be sure not to over apply or you will end up with white circles under your eyes in the photos. Gradually build your coverage. If you need a lot, you are using the wrong concealer for you.

Powder:

Most girls, including myself, hate hate hate powder. But on your wedding day, it is a must to set the foundation or else your makeup will disappear before the event is over.
- Use a loose powder. It will look less cakey and give you a more natural look than pressed powder.
-	You can use a compact to touch up your t-zone later. Just make sure to blot the oil first before reapplying or the powder will cake.
- For more information on picking the right powder color for you, click HERE

.

Eyes:

If you wish to make your eyes dramatic, remember to keep your lips light, and vice versa! Many desi artists make the mistake of heavy eyes and heavy lips with horrifying results. Pick the feature you wish to work.

-	It is a natural desi instinct to use black liquid liner. But, in your pictures this look will be too harsh and besides, the look is dated. Ask the artist if they can use a powder shadow as a liner, or if they insist on liquid liner ask if they can go over it with a lighter shadow to soften the look. Gel liners are best – they have great lasting power and look fabulous!
-	Try to use a minimum amount of shimmer on your lids as the flashes will reflect off your eyes to produce glaring lids in the pictures. Stick to shimmer lower on the lids with matte shades in the lid crease to add more depth to the eye.
-	Avoid creamy/frosty shadows as they will cake up and settle into the lines on your lid.
-	Don’t forget your eyebrows! Powder looks more natural than pencil, and remember to go a shade lighter than your hair (black is too harsh for anyone). You can go over the brows with a clear mascara or brow gel after the powder if you want to avoid the matte look.
-	Always use waterproof mascara. Even if you’re not a big crier, the heat from the lights and the weight of your clothes will make you perspire and will smudge your mascara. You don’t want to look like a raccoon on your big day. Double coat with the waterproof.

Cheeks:

It is easy to overdo the blush, so be careful not to end up like Raggedy Ann!

-	Although cream blushes look great, the lasting power is nil. Stick to powder blushes. If you insist on a cream blush, it is important to go over it with a powder blush or your cheeks will be colorless soon after the wedding begins. Remember – you will be wearing heavy clothes and jewelry and will be under constant flashes. Your makeup fades faster under these circumstances.
-	Highlighters can be dangerous. If you must use one, make sure it has minimal shimmer. Do not in any way shape or form use glitter, frost or high shimmer. Because of the particles in shimmer, you will look like you’re sweating not glowing where the flash hits your face. Try and find a luminizer rather than shimmer highlighter.

Lips:

The finishing touch to your look and the most difficult feature to keep makeup on because you will be talking a lot and eating. The key to keeping lipstick on is to layer. Again, if you have done heavy eyes, keep your lips light.

-	Use a lip primer, preferably a concealer that will prep your lips and also provide a bare canvas to work with.
-	Fill in your lips completely with a lip pencil before applying lipstick to provide the lipstick with something to stick to. Use the same color pencil as your lipstick. If your lipstick fades you don’t want an obvious darker ring around your mouth where your lip liner remained after the lipstick wore off.
-	Go over your lip liner with a long-staying matte lipstick, blot with a tissue and then apply again. This matte lipstick is your base.
-	Layer the matte lipstick with a creamy lipstick in the same shade to make your mouth look softer. It’s best to stay away from gloss, as it fades quickly. The creamy lipstick should stay in place much longer.
-	If you have small lips, stick with lighter shades. Dark lipstick will accentuate a small mouth.

A few final notes: Try to discuss the colors your artist will use for your eyes and lips beforehand. Keep the color of your jora in mind, and remember it’s not necessary to match it but rather to complement it (red joras do not = red eye shadow). Also, if the kaam on your jora and your jewelry are very heavy you may want lighter makeup and vice versa. Once again, try not to instruct your artist (I have a few friends who have offended their artists by doing so) but rather consult with them in an appointment before the actual wedding date. If the artist doesn’t want to listen to you, it’s best to find someone who will. You need to feel comfortable with who you’re working with.

Finally, your wedding day makeup may be a little more than you’re used to wearing. This is natural, as stronger pigments are needed to show up under brighter lights. However, there is such a thing as overdone – you have to be the judge!

Good luck and best wishes to all those getting married this winter season!

Black Friday scares me.
